Mario Kart Wii 24-06-2008 ![]() Article: Platform: Nintendo Wii Developer: Nintendo Publisher: Nintendo Genre: Racing Nintendo's Mario Kart! The new racing game of Nintendo is released for a while! But it's not to late to review it. We think that most people know about which game we're talking about. Let's explain the target of this game for the people who don't know it. Mario kart is an arcade racing game with the most fancy tracks. Like racing trough the mall or vulcano are the most normal aspects of this game. ![]() The game itself When you put the disc into the Wii and start the game, you'll hear one of the most annoying sounds. Nintendo WIIIIIIIIII is the sound you'll hear. After a few times you'll get used to that sound. When we arrived in the menu, we needed to create an account and the basic steps that you could expect (like selecting your Mii).
Let's start explaining each game mode. 1. Grand Prix This is the most important gametype. You need to race against other karts. Each track you'll drive, will be rated with a letter or star (which has effect on what you'll unlock). The tracks are sorted in cups. Each cup has four tracks. Of course you'll unlock stuff after racing all cups in your dificulty setting. The dificulty is based on the speed of a kart. 150cc will be more dificult than 50cc for example. But the enemies will be more aggressive and we even have seen a kart cheating to get us down! You'll unlock the mirror mode when you've raced all tracks on 50/100/150cc. Just what most people will expect like the previous versions of this game. And to make it even harder or easier, you can pick stuff up from the road. The boxes with the question mark will have a suprise for you! Stuff like banana's, bombs, turtle shells and even lightning are available in such a box! Anyway, this Grand Prix mode will cause the most fun! 2. Time Attack! You could already guess what the target is of "Time attack"! Racing on tracks to get the best time. You can even challenge yourself in a sort of ghost idea. Anyway, more unlockables will be available if you race all tracks in "Time attack". This makes it more challenging to race. ![]() 3. Battlemode Battlemode is like the name said: a "battle" to destroy each other's balloons or collecting the most coins within the time that's set. This is very challenging online but it couldn't trigger us to play it. The "Grand Prix" modus was far more interesting. 4. Online modus We couldn't believe it but Mario Kart has an Online modus! The previous version (Double Dash) had such an option too, but you needed to buy an extra adapter to connect your Gamecube to the internet. If you win a challenge, you'll get points. Your total score will have effect on your rank and will show other people your skills too. The online modus is very cool because you can play with people all over the world. And it doesn't even lag Characters, karts and skills? The character and kart/bike combination has really effect on the track. That's because some combinations will be to slow or others can't drift very good (for example). Karts and bikes will be shown with it's specifications. You can choose carefully which verhicle to race with. Wario and a big car will have a slow acceleration. And Nintendo is really nice to us! They have added some new features in this game like:
The characters are the most normal Nintendo creatures like Joshi or Mario itself. But you need to unlock most of them with the races. And don't forget that your skills will have effect on each verhicle. Because drifting could help you to make sharp corners better or to get a boost.! Graphics, sounds and other stuff! The graphics are very nice if you compare it with "Double Dash". No more short-distance blur, bloomy effects and sharper textures are the best improvements. The sounds are sometimes annoying but they are good enough and fit very good in the game. Our only subject to complain about is the cheating in the 150cc mode. We where racing the "flower cup" in the 150cc mode. Twenty meters before the finish (And yes, we where first!), the enemy knew how to blow us to the last place. You should think that this is just stupid luck... It happened us six times! And that's not the only cheat factor in the game. The Wii chooses a character and let he be the best competitor against you. No matter what happens, he will stay near your ranking. If you are first, he will be second. Even when you blow him out of the track, he will race near you before you even know it! We think that Nintendo didn't knew how to make it more dificult with a fair method. ![]() Conclusion It's really a good game that's very entertaining. Mario kart Wii is the best party game that we have ever seen on the Wii. But the cheating in the 150cc modus isn't that much fun (sometimes). It even can get you pissed off, But the online mode will calm you down and the "Battlemode" will cause some fun too. Those tracks are very nice worked out and we didn't saw any bugs. The drifting, stunting and racing was quite good and everything reacted as we like to see. The graphics and sounds are cool too. But you need to like the colorfull area's and cartoony style characters. It's a nice arcade game to play with friends. We think that this game deserves four stars because of some annoying sounds and cheating in the game. Productrating:
