Spore 02-11-2008 ![]() Article: Platform: PC, Mac Developer: Maxis Publisher: EA games Genre: Simulation Life is life... Let's begin to explain what Spore is. Spore is a simulation game that's based on Charles Darwin's theory about evolution. You will start with a simple creature that will evolve if you've scored enough points. Every action will have effect on your animal. The animal itself will get more advanced in every stage. It depends on your strategy and design. But there are many phases to go trough:
![]() Cell The cell phase is the start of life. A comet with cells hit a planet you've chosen from the menu and your animal is ready to life on a planet! You'll start with a simple creature that can eat plants or meat and lives in the water. You will get points from killing other animals, escaping from big hunting animals and collecting food. If you have enough points, you can call an other creature to "multiply". It will give you the opportunity to moddify your creature to a better one! The creature will get legs at the end and you'll be invading the landscape above the water. Creature The new animal that is created, will be tested in the hard and wild nature. Make friends with other animals, try to find food and try to survive. It's not the most dificult part of the game but you need to watch out for aggressive animals. They can kill your creature if they are stronger. But the animal can have "natural" weapons like spikes, jaws and fists to defend itself. After scoring enough points, your animal will gain more intelligence and it started to learn to build houses and stuff like that. Tribal Your creature (how ugly, stupid, cool or dumb it is) will be the leader of a group animals that will form a tribe. This part will look like a RTS game because they need to build houses, weapons and music instruments. But Electronic Arts has put more tribes in the game to make it dificult. Your goal is to be a friend or enemy from the other tribes. To get friends with a tribe, you need to play a sort of minigame. The tribe of yours will play a song for the other tribe. But you need to use the instrument when the other tribe asked for it. The better you listen to the other tribe, the faster the "friends" bar will rise. But if you don't like to be friends, you can always create an army to defeat them. Don't expect things like Rome Total War! You can create 12 tribe members at maximum (if you've reached the maximum level). If the goal is completed, you will enter the Civilization phase. ![]() Civilization Only the best developed creature will reach the top! You're able to build your own town. The disapointing subject is that you're limited by the size of the town. The goal is again to get all the villages in your control. You can attack the town or let the people in the town do the job. This phase is very short because you can turn every village easily around to control it. Only getting money is the hardest point. But you only need to let a car capture a sort of smoke point. Space After the short civilization phase, you've able to create a nice spacecraft that could look like a flying dish or something. You will go into space like you could expect. There are many possibilities to tell about! But we just take a short selection of it. You can terraform a planet to make it perfect for your creatures (it will be shown in a sort of score), You can meet other aliens and decide to make war or be friends with it. Every alien has missions for you to complete, many unlockable's and upgrades in the game and you can explore the whole universe! So, what kind of upgrades are available? New weapons, improved engine and more... The goal is to explore the space, look around, terraform a new planet and earn money! This is the most advanced phase and you'll have totally freedom! ![]() Graphics... so what about it? It's far from "next gen" graphics but it doesn't spoil the gameplay. There is a sort of glare over the creatures, simple models for planets, nature and grass but the scenery looks very awesome. The animals and creatures are very detailed. But Maxis has done very well with the shadows and the total looks. You really can see a theme at any planet! Maxis has made the game very colorfull too. It looks a bit cartoony. Somehow, it fits well in the game. Sounds! Nothing to say about. The sounds are good. Not disturbing, annoying or something like that. Even the animals have their own voice. And that's very cool! It supports surround sound (up to 5.1) and it just fits in the game. Somehow, I didn't hear much surround though... Conclusion The game is quite fun! If you create your own bird thing on two legs with a monkey head, it can be very entertaining to see how your creature is evolving. Anyway, the phases are very short. Maxis should have stretched the whole thing. And the options, tasks and missions are just to simple. Spore is just a colorfull and entertaining game that could give you a lot of fun. But it's very cool to play and the game deserves 4 of the 5 stars. Productrating:
